Have you ever stood in front of a camera, not knowing what to do with your hands, your legs or simply felt absolutely insecure? I’m here to help you with some easy-going couple poses for your next photoshoot so you don’t have to worry about these things anymore!
Beginner Photography Poses
I know it can be hard if you feel uncomfortable in front of a camera. However, this feeling will subside over time. In 2015 I started blogging and photographed food. That’s easy, because you don’t have to worry about your own hair, your own appearance or how to pose in pictures.
Nevertheless, I wanted to give my profile a more personal touch at some point and took the first photos of me. And should I tell you something? I felt terribly uncomfortable in front of the camera. So I looked away. I avoided looking at the camera, because whenever I smiled, I looked terribly nervous and scared. That’s nothing you want in your photos!
Why you need to practice
Instead of practicing, I simply told myself ‚I can’t‘. Some people are photogenic, but I didn’t seem to be. *NEWS ALERT* You don’t have to be a super-model to take good photos! And don’t let anyone tell you that you’re not pretty enough, not skinny enough or simply not photogenic enough. YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL! Right now you just may not know how to show it in front of the camera.

After Florian and I had been together for some time, we decided to take the first photos together. However, the result was not very impressive and we felt somewhat discouraged, which is why we stopped taking photos for a while.
At some point, however, we decided that we would not let that stop us. If others can take beautiful photos, we can, too, right?
The answer is YES! It’s all about practicing. We drove to nearby towns and surroundings to take photos because that was the only way we could practice. For the photo style, we opted for poses that were as natural as possible, but also looked for inspiration on Pinterest and Instagram.
Tips for feeling comfortable in front of a camera
The first few times felt incredibly insecure, unfamiliar, and uncomfortable. You stand in front of this camera and think: what am I doing here? And if you let your gaze wander, you see people looking at you and – in your own eyes – obviously thinking the exact same thing.
First off: They don’t judge you! Sometimes, people may look at you, but don’t let that discourage you. Take your time, take a deep breath and focus on yourself or on your partner. Just imagine: if this person was you right now, she/he wouldn’t look any better. So why should they judge you? And actually, most people are just curious.
Easy Couple Photography Poses
Here are a few tips I like to consider before taking photos:
- Act natural
- Do not let yourself get distracted
- Adjust your poses to the environment
Couple City Photography
Usually, when we’re in cities, our poses depend on our environment. For example, when taking a look at the first image, you will see that the environment is very urban, filled with cool colors and is predominantly black and blue. That’s why we opted for a casual, urban posing that just came to my mind. For your interest, Düsseldorf is generally a very modern, cool urban city.
In the second image, you see that we’re in a more colorful surrounding. In fact, we’re standing on the market place in Mainz. That’s why we thought posing should be a little more relaxed.
Looking at the last photo, we were in Linz am Rhein, a cute fairytale village not far away from Drachenburg Castle. Here, we thought something more cute and lovely would fit perfectly. Normally we just build up our tripod and camera and set the camera in burst mode. Then we take our photos acting as natural as possible.
Couple Photography for Palaces & Castles
In our opinion, castles and palaces require something special, depending on the location. Of course, it also always depends on the mood you want in your pictures. Do you want a mystical, dreamy looking photo? Or do you want to photograph something in a more wedding-looking style? You could also opt for a princess shooting or whatever comes to your mind.
Speaking of us, we want to stay true to our style and always make something a little more extra or casual, depending on our mood, the weather, etc.
For example, we chose jeans and shirt for our visit to Burg Eltz and something more classy when we visited Schloss Drachenburg or Schloss Benrath.
Beach Photography for Couples
Oftentimes, beach couple posing seems kinda hard and exhausting, but it was actually our favorite! We loved how naturally we acted and how good the results were.
Here are some favorite shots from a beach in Dominica:

Please keep in mind that many couple posing ideas also depend on the location. We often see a beautiful place and decide spontaneously to take photos. At the beginning of our photography, however, we planned everything carefully, posed beforehand and considered where we should take photos.
This spontaneity will not come overnight, but you will get better with time, pose will be easier for you and you will develop creative ideas yourself. Don’t be disappointed if it doesn’t work the first time. Try to motivate each other and keep practicing.
And if there’s one thing I learn in the past year: Unposed couple posing ideas are still the best! As I already said, you need to act normal, because super-staged posing ideas often look very artificial.
Stay true to yourself, develop your own style over time and above all: have fun!
I really hope that I could help you with these couple posing ideas and give you some new inspiration. If you have any questions or ideas, feel free to contact me. 🙂
