I recently wrote about the possibilities to bring Paris to your own home or how to avoid wanderlust, but did you know that you can actually travel from home? With each and everyone of us staying at home and not being able to travel, traveling from home is a huge opportunity to learn something new, enjoy a foreign country or simply make your quarantine day a little less annoying. Here are 10 ways to enjoy travel from your home.
Possibilities to travel from home
1. Binge Travel Blogs & Videos
I already mentioned this as an opportunity to get rid of your wanderlust since blogs (like this virtual trip to Dominica) or videos oftentimes feel like you actually know the foreign country.
Plus, this way you’re supporting small businesses and freelancers without any effort. Pretty cool, isn’t it?
2. Virtual Tours
Have I mentioned my new favorite website? Google Arts and Culture. It’s filled with interesting articles about art, history, and culture. Plus, you can also download it as an app for your smartphone.
Moreover, many museums and sights have new virtual tours as well. Here are a few:
3. Stream wanderlusty movies or TV shows
In the world of streaming, there are so many movies or TV shows that are travel related and perfect to dream yourself away to foreign destinations.
The best thing? You don’t need Netflix or Amazon Prime! There are some very great YouTube channels, just like National Geographic.
Otherwise, here are some quick recommendations for movies I personally love:
- An American in Paris
- Paris, Je t’aime
- La vie en rose
- An Idiot Abroad
- Amélie
4. Cook up global inspired dishes
What’s better than a French croissant, American pancakes, Portuguese Pastéis de Nata or German Lemon Cake?
Moreover, you can get so many free ideas and tutorials for recipes on Pinterest. I always love exploring Pinterest for any kind of advice: travel, recipes, lifestyle, quotes, etc.
5. Enjoy a country-inspired night in
What about a country-inspired night at your own home? Pick a special film that’s focused on a destination, cook a meal related to the same destination and if you’re extra fancy, use some scents to perfect the experience.
You can even have a watch party with friends on Skype or Zoom/Google Hangout, whatever you prefer.
Some ideas for your country-inspired experience:
- Watch Amélie and have a crisp glass of rosé, baguette, cheese and creme brûlée.
- Watch Eat Pray Love and have Pizza Napolitana (my favorite).
- Watch Queen of the Desert and have mint tea, tajine and vanilla pudding.
6. Spy on worldwide webcams
Did you know that many cameras stream everything live 24/7? So, you can either enjoy the view of the Eiffel Tower or spy at the Cologne Cathedral whilst still wearing your pyjamas.
Websites like EarthCam have live HD webcams from all over the world, so you can quickly check in on Times Square or the Maldives. What about the sunset at the Eiffel Tower? Or maybe binge watch the Cologne Cathedral?
While not live, if you’re getting tired of staring at webcams all the time, you can also go for an HD view of the world by watching Full Screen 360. There’s plenty footage from all over the world, just like Rome, Paris or even Munich.
7. Explore with MapCrunch
Did you know that there is a website called MapCrunch that drops you off in a random Google Streetview location?
So, it literally drops you off anywhere in the world and back in the 2010s, it was a popular game with friends to find the nearest airport from your random location to kind of navigate back home.
8. Read some good travel books
When quarantine started, I promised myself to read more books. So, I treat myself to some wanderlust reads!
- A year in Provence by Peter Mayle
- The Art of Travel by Alain de Botton
- Visit Sunny Chernobyl by Andrew Blackwell
- Wild: A journey from lost to found by Cheryl Strayed
9. Make your own photo books
Why not use this time without being able to travel to finally sort out some good photos and make a photo book?
This way, you’ll easily remind places and experiences that you already forgot or simply travel back in time to your own memories.
10. Explore your environment
Just in case you’re not in a strict lockdown, you could also explore your environment. Since I’m living in Cologne, I’m pretty lucky to have city and nature right beside me and there’s nothing better than exploring some unknown places in your own city or nearby.
