A small charming town on the Rhine River invites you to stroll through historic alleys and fascinates not only with small corners of the old wine trading place but also with its many half-timbered houses. Bacharach is a picturesque village with wonderful flair and character.
Bacharach’s History
From the very beginning, Bacharach, which is a city in the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley, was an important point in the wine industry.
A legend says that kings in the region only wanted to drink the delicious Bacharach wine. Such a city naturally has my attention immediately, because what could be nicer than a cozy summer evening with good wine and a nice atmosphere? Fortunately, Bacharach never disappoints here!
Arrival in Bacharach
Bacharach is located directly on the Rhine River and is easy to reach by car or train. There are numerous parking spaces in front of the city wall so that any car can be accommodated. The train station is also right on the city.
In addition, you could even travel by boat or bike if you’re in a nearby town.
When should you visit Bacharach?
I recommend visiting Bacharach in summer, especially late summer is an ideal time to visit small villages in the area and enjoy the delicious regional wine. At this time you can also take a relaxed boat trip on the Rhine and enjoy the temperatures on a walk.
How long should you stay in Bacharach
One day is enough to see, experience, and enjoy Bacharach. For your visit you should keep in mind that you will mainly find individual accommodations in the village itself and that you do not need to expect large hotel chains.
Explore Bacharach
When you visit Bacharach, it feels like you are being transported back to the 11th century. Beautiful, stopped in time and with many loving details, it’s definitely one of those trips that feel special.
When you enter the center of the city, you can see it directly: the beautiful half-timbered houses in the quiet cobblestone streets. The city itself is rather small and can therefore be crossed quickly on foot.
A look up reveals the Stahleck Castle, which is a youth hostel today.
Wine tasting in Bacharach
After Bacharach is known for good wine, you should definitely not miss it. Wine bars in particular invite you to do so. Weingut Karl Heidrich, for example, has three different types of wine tasting: dry, sweet or a combination of both. The testing of six wines therefore costs around €15.
Eating in Bacharach
We found that Bacharach was priced very down-to-earth and the food overall was very good. The “Old House” in the city center is not only the oldest building in the city, but also serves traditional German food in a historic atmosphere.
The Posthof restaurant and café is perfect for sitting outside and enjoying the view.
For dessert, the Eis Café Italia is ideal. Tip: definitely try the Riesling gelato!
Conclusion & Our Opinion
Overall, we found the city to be very beautiful, small and fairytale-like. It is a perfect day trip from Cologne, Frankfurt or Düsseldorf – or almost any other city in the Moselle region. Bacharach is a real lucky find and definitely one of the most beautiful villages in Germany.
