Cherry Blossoms in Bonn, Germany

6. April 2020 by tabithaschr 11 Comments

Bonn, Germany is a rather unknown city in North Rhine-Westphalia. If the city receives little attention otherwise, thousands of people from all over the world usually come to the cherry blossom season! This year it looks a little different: shops are closed and no tourist is lost in the beautiful city on the Rhine.

The cherry blossom still remains a magical natural spectacle, which is why I decided to simply bring this straight into your living room! In this article I will also show you the best photo spots and give you tips on how to get there and where to park so that you can benefit from it in the years to come.

Cherry Blossoms in Bonn

Spring has finally arrived in Germany! The birds are chirping, the thermometer is climbing above 20 degrees and the sun is laughing at us from a cloudless sky. You can finally sit outside again and enjoy the beautiful nature.

Nature also awakens from its hibernation. Trees, shrubs, grass and flowers stretch out towards the warm sunlight. The first buds sprout, flowers open their heads and a sweet smell is in the air. The most beautiful and probably the strongest effect that nature conjures up every spring is the bright pink flowers of the Japanese cherry.

Cherry blossoms are revered for their beauty particularly in Japan, but also in Germany there are worthwhile places that shine in bloom magic in spring.

Above all, there is the Gardens of the World at the Cherry Blossom Festival in Berlin and the cherry blossoms in Bonn.

In the middle of the old town, between the beautiful facades of the old buildings, the delicate pink flowers are shining. Only 20 minutes away from my hometown, I am attending this spectacle every year.

Even if it is a little different this year, I enjoy the little walk in the fresh air, the beauty of the flowers and the warmth on the skin.

Tips for traveling to Bonn

The perfect timing

Cherries usually bloom between mid-March and mid-April. Unfortunately, a very precise point in time at which the delicate flowers open cannot be determined, because this depends on the weather. So if it gets warm early, the cherry blossom can take place earlier.

As soon as the flowers sprout, you have to hurry, because the pink splendor won’t last long. The cherry blossoms will definitely still be on view in Bonn for about a week.

If you want to be absolutely sure, you can follow the live updates of the cherry blossom here. It is a blog runned by a local with daily updates.

Most trees bloom here

The avenues that you have probably admired on Instagram several times can be found on Heerstraße and Breitestraße. The cherry trees are so close together that they form a fairytale canopy made of pink flowers.

Arrival and parking in Bonn City

Since the parking spaces around Heerstraße are relatively rare, it makes sense to travel to Bonn by public transport or arrive early. You can simply park your car at a train station and ride one stop.

If you are traveling by car, you should either look for parking garages or, if you’re lucky, drive up to Heerstraße and hope for a parking space. Of course, the chances are best early in the morning. However, you are only allowed to stand on most roadside parking spaces with a residents‘ parking permit. In between there are always parking spaces in which you can park for two hours free of charge.

The best photo light

If you want to take great photos of the cherry blossom in Bonn, you should do it early in the morning. Between 7 and 9 am works best. Not only are there a few people on site who can disturb the picture, but the light is also very special.

Since the cherry trees only bloom for a very short time, the Heerstrasse is hopelessly crowded at lunch time.

Tourists from all over the world, amateur- and professional photographers, residents and business people come by to experience the pink blossom magic. Even a Crêpe seller is making his way through the chaos with his small, mobile stand.

Photo inspiration for Instagram

You can find lots of inspiration for great cherry blossom photos on Instagram. Anyone looking for the hashtags #kirschblütebonn or #heerstraße will find great motifs. If you have taken beautiful photos of the cherry blossom in Bonn, you can even submit them to a photo competition and win great prizes.

Breakfast with a cherry blossom view

As soon as the sun comes out, the first cafes usually open. There you will almost always find a delicious breakfast at a good price!
