A Day Trip to Beautiful Monschau

17. April 2020 by tabithaschr 12 Comments

You’ve probably already seen Monschau’s beautiful half-timbered houses in your Instagram feed. Monschau is a popular travel destination, especially at Christmas. Nevertheless, Monschau has an incredible charm also in warmer seasons. This post should give you an impression of the small town in the German Eifel.

Monschau, Germany

Monschau is a small town in the German Eifel. Time has stood still in this enchanting place for over three centuries.

The village is considered the cultural center of the Eifel and is the ideal starting point to explore the fascinating wilderness of the Eifel.

Monschau itself enchants you with romantic alleys, beautiful half-timbered houses and medieval walls.

One Day in Monschau

Monschau is a small town, so you shouldn’t expect to have the same sights as in a big city. Of course, cities like Munich, Hamburg or Berlin offer a variety of other hotspots – but that’s exactly what Monschau is all about.

When visiting the cute Eifel village, you come to enjoy the beauty of the city and simply immerse into this very specific culture.

The best things to see & do in Monschau

Rotes Haus Monschau

The „Red House“ is the former headquarters of the Scheibler family and is now a museum. Actually, it is the most famous landmark in Monschau.

However, while the red brick house stands out from the city’s half-timbered houses, its simple exterior gives no indication of the interior.

The museum is decorated in luxurious rococo style furniture and has antique and very valuable pieces of furniture, tapestries and other artifacts.

The absolute highlight of the Red House is the oak staircase, which winds over three floors and is intended to embody the different phases of textile production.

Senfmühle Monschau | Mustard Mill

Have you always wanted to watch how mustard is made? In Monschau you can visit the historic mustard mill.

This family-run mustard mill has been making delicious mustard in the same traditional way for over 120 years. It is known for producing 19 types of mustard.

As a visitor you are invited to try and buy mustard, jam, chutneys, liqueurs and even mustard chocolates.

Monschau’s Old Town

Monschau’s old town is a dreamy place for a walk. In the heart of Monschau you show half-timbered houses like from picture books, walk on romantic cobblestone streets and initiate in picturesque shops.

At Christmas time, the entire village is transformed into a magical wonderland of sparkling lights, beautiful Christmas stands and a wonderful fragrance.

Furthermore, the Eifel is perfect for hiking. With over 240km of hiking trails, nobody gets bored so quickly.

To make it a little easier for you, I would like to share my favorite photo tips for Monschau with you:

  • Try to visit as early as possible. It gets crowded, especially on weekends. It is a popular destination for people from surrounding areas and cities.
  • Let the city work on you. Only then will you find the beautiful corners and buildings that we all love so much.
  • Take your time and don’t stress. The romantic Monschau invites you to relax. You should also use this.
  • Try yourself at different angles. Only this gives many pictures an extra touch.
