The Eifel is the German part of a low mountain range whose continuation in Belgium and Luxembourg are the Ardennes. It is a popular destination, especially in summer and autumn, with many small, beautiful places – just like Monreal.
Today’s post is all about romantic Monreal, a perfect excursion destination near Eltz Castle.
Romantic Monreal in the Eifel, Germany
The romantic village of Monreal lies in the narrow Elztal near Mayen and is hence not far away from the Eltz Castle. Indeed, you could even manage to see both in one day since Monreal is a rather small village.
When we decided to visit Monreal, we planned our trip to Monreal in the morning and afterwards did some hiking in the beautiful Eltz area.
Lion- and Philipps castle & hiking the dream path
Actually, Monreal is dominated by two castle ruins, the so-called ‚Löwen- und Philippsburg‘. The both ruins are the destination of many hikers since the 13.7km long Eifel dream path ‚Monreal Knighthood‚ provides you with a spectacular view.
Monreal’s Architecture
In Monreal, well-preserved half-timbered houses are reminiscent of the heyday of cloth making.
As you walk through the streets of Monreal you will likely see little signs on houses. These are exclusively in German and tell something about the history of each house. With the help of Google Lens, however, you can translate them perfectly.
Sights in Monreal
Actually, Monreal is a very small village and does not offer many sights. It offers a beautiful experience, but the late Gothic parish church or the stone bridge with a baroque Nepomuk figure are among the most popular sights.
When visiting Monreal, I’d highly recommend to plan other activities for the same day as you might not want to spend a whole day in Monreal.
Hiking the Monreal Knighthood dream path or driving to Burg Eltz seems perfect for me though. If you want to do some hiking, you can still hike the dream path Eltzer Burgpanorama.
Monreal Photo Spots
Just like I said, romantic Monreal is a village where you won’t be busy sightseeing for ages. I would say that you can see the city within one hour and spend some time with photography.
Actually, Monreal is one of the most photogenic excursion destinations in the German Eifel and the whole village is a treat for the eyes.
My favorite Monreal photo spots
To be honest, Monreal has a particularly nice spot, which you can’t miss. This is right in the middle of the small village and offers various beautiful corners.
