Tulip Fields in Germany: a Day Trip From Cologne

12. April 2020 by tabithaschr 4 Comments

The tulip fields in the Netherlands are known worldwide. Every year, several thousand people make a pilgrimage there to admire the beautiful flowers. Sad that I can forget my visit to Lisse, Netherlands this year, I discovered a huge, beautiful flower field while going for a walk. Not far from Cologne and Düsseldorf, this is a real alternative!

Tulip fields in Germany – Nearby Cologne

Tulip fields are mainly known from the Netherlands – in the beautiful town of Lisse, thousands of people visit the flowering fields every year, which not infrequently adorn our Instagram feed. The tulips bloom in different colors between March and May and offer a beautiful, spring-like photo motif.

So, for a long time I lived closed to what is probably the most beautiful tulip field in Germany and knew nothing of my luck.

Photo Tips

No matter which tulip field you will visit: chances are that you are not alone. If you are lucky that nobody knows anything about the tulip field in your area, taking pictures will be a little easier, but you can assume that even in a village at least 100 people will be there at busy times.

However, if you want to have as few or no people in your picture as possible, the following options are available:

  1. Use particularly unique angles that automatically exclude other people from the photos.
  2. Ask, very simply and politely, the person to step to the side. In return, you could offer to take photos of them afterwards.
  3. Retouch the photos afterwards.
  4. Wait for the people to leave the picture. However, this could often take a really long time, since experience has shown that someone else will be in the picture then.
  5. Come early in the morning.

In general – in my opinion – the first option is the best. This directly prevents your pictures from looking like thousands of others. Win-win situation!

Here, for example, we took pictures diagonally from the side. This has the advantage that the tulip field looks bigger directly and it does not look 08/15.

Camera Settings

For taking pictures, it is also advantageous to activate the „serial photo“ function, as this allows you to capture unique moments. In the end, snapshots are still the most beautiful photos, aren’t they?

If you are shy, it is of course helpful to show up early in the morning to prevent crowds. So you have the tulip fields to yourself and can take photos undisturbed.

Clothing Tips

By the way, spring-like clothing is the best choice, i.e. you should choose light colors (white, light blue) and airy clothes. Make absolutely sure that the colors don’t bite at best. So you should avoid a bright green field in a light yellow field. However, since there are at least 6 tulip colors in most cases, this should be the lesser problem.

For the ladies, long, flowing skirts or shorter dresses with a floral pattern are perfect and fit perfectly into the setting!

Tips for finding tulip fields near you

Unfortunately, you will often not find these top addresses when you google – otherwise we would all have discovered them much earlier.

However, here are a few tips on how to find some tulip fields near you. Tulips are more common in Germany than we think. And ultimately, you may not really have to go far at all. Great, isn’t it?

Social Media

First, you should look at hashtags or tags on Instagram. Look there specifically for places near you that you know have fields there. For example, if you live in Cologne, this could be direct suburbs.

When is the best time to search for pictures

The best thing to do is look in early March, because then photos from the last year are often posted again. So you can discover one or the other location.
