Best time to visit Zermatt
It may or may not surprise you, but the Zermatt region in Switzerland is popular year-round. The best time for winter sports, like skiing, snowboarding or sledging, is from December to the beginning of April whilst summer is the best season for outdoor activities like hiking.
Hence, you could definitely visit Zermatt during any month of the year, but winter and summer are usually the most requested times.
How to get to Zermatt, Switzerland & how to reach Riffelalp Resort 2222m
One thing you should definitely know upfront: Zermatt is completely car-free. However, that does not mean that you cannot reach Zermatt conveniently. You can travel to Zermatt by train, taxi or helicopter. Drivers can simply park their car in a multi-storey car park in Täsch and take a shuttle or a taxi to Zermatt.
Since we usually travel by car, we booked a parking spot at the Täsch Matterhorn Terminal and took the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn to Zermatt. From there on, you need to use the Gornergrat Bahn in order to travel to Riffelalp Resort 2222m. You can simply buy a ticket from Täsch to Riffelalp and the Riffelalp Resort staff will take care of your luggage once you arrived at your final destination.

The Riffelalp Resort 2222m is one of the best hotels in the world. Not only does the hotel belong to the alliance of The Leading Hotels of the World and received numerous awards, it also belongs to the selection of Swiss Deluxe Hotels.
History of the Riffelalp Resort 2222m
I simply love Hotels that have a history and the Grand Hotel Riffelalp was officially opened for summer tourism on July 10 in 1884 which underlines how steeped in history the hotel is. Back in the days, it quickly became the playground of European high society. And even after a major fire in 1961 that completely destroyed the main building, the Riffelalp Resort 2222m made sure that this great tradition can live on today.
Our stay at Riffelalp Resort 2222m
We stayed at the Riffelalp Resort 2222m for two days which were enough to fall in love with the marvellous views, the outstanding hotel and the incredible service. Whether it’s the view from Europe’s highest outdoor pool, a visit to one of the top restaurants with exquisite cuisine or relaxation in the wellness area – the hotel is a true oasis for anyone who loves luxury.
As soon as you step inside, the friendly staff welcomes you and you immediately feel home at 2222 meters above the sea. Although the hotel has been renovated until 2000, it has retained so much of its past and the associated charm.
Rooms at Riffelalp Resort 2222m
The hotel offers ten different room categories, from the smaller „Nature Grandlit“ with about 20-25 sq.m. to the 103 sq.m. „Suite Matterhorn, which makes sure that everyone finds what they need. All rooms are luxurious, comfortable, and come with a breathtaking view either of Matterhorn mountain or the surrounding nature.
During our time at the Riffelalp Resort 2222m, we stayed in one of their Matterhorn Superior rooms which are 40 sq.m. in size and come with a breathtaking view of the Matterhorn. I’d definitely recommend choosing this room category as you’ll go to bed with incredible views of the starry sky that illuminate the Matterhorn mountain and you’ll wake up with the typical sunrise view. If that does not get you excited, I don’t know what will!
And the best thing: You can also have breakfast on the balcony which allows you to admire the Matterhorn while drinking coffee and enjoying „Gipfeli„, Swiss Croissants.
Breakfast, Dinner & Bar at Riffelalp Resort 2222m
Breakfast with a view of the famous Matterhorn? No problem! Either have breakfast in your room or in the breakfast room where they serve incredible delicious food and everything you could possibly want for breakfast. Be sure to order in-room breakfast the evening before though. You can simply tick a card with various offers and specify your preferred breakfast time in order to have breakfast delivered straight to your room whenever you want.
Moreover, the hotel’s restaurants are known for unique moments of pleasure at the highest level. Ristorante Al Bosco with its distinctive “Italianità under the Matterhorn” is dedicated to the cuisine of the Italian and Swiss Alpine regions. In the Alexandre restaurant, a cozy ambience and a spectacular view of the Matterhorn combine with regional and Mediterranean specialties to create an exquisite culinary delight. And a rustic and cozy chalet and mountain hut atmosphere awaits you in the Walliserkeller at an altitude of 2222 meters combined with delicious food. If that does not sound like true heaven, I don’t know what will!
In addition to all that, they also have a bar that’s open from 11 am and is the absolute best spot to grab coffee, mulled wine or drinks in the evening.
Spa & Wellness at Riffelalp Resort 2222m
As previously mentioned, the outdoor pool is Europe’s highest and does come with ravishing views of the Matterhorn mountain. The fact that you can enjoy the cold and the views whilst swimming or relaxing in a hot pool just is everything! If the outdoor pool for whatever reason doesn’t suit you, you can still swim or do water sports indoors, too.
Furthermore, the Riffelalp Resort has a steam sauna, a finish sauna, a bio sauna, a grotto, and a whirlpool indoors as well. The perfect combination for anyone who wants to relax after a long day on the slopes or after hiking.

Two days at Riffelalp Resort 2222m are just enough to realize that you would want to stay for two weeks or even longer! The hotel is the perfect place to base yourself if you want to explore the surrounding nature or just want to relax. Whatever reason leads you there, I’m sure you’ll love the hotel just like I did.
